COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) 50 years ago Tuesday, Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  wrote his famous Letter From Birmingham Jail.

An observance at the Columbus Lowndes Public Library included WCBI’s R. H. Brown reading excerpts from that document.

The letter talked of the plight of a disenfranchised minority seeking freedom and equality. While incarcerated, King gave just reasons for popular “sit-ins” which were a segregation tool for change at the time.

The letter defends the strategy of nonviolent resistance, arguing that people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws.
