CARROLLTON, Ala. (WCBI) – It’s a story WCBI has been following all week.

A husband a wife, both coaches and teachers, are accused of having sex with students.

In court documents prosecutors say several of the sex acts happened at a cemetery.

Charli Parker and her husband, James Parker, were booked into the Pickens County Jail and charged with having sex with students.

The couple is teachers and coaches at Pickens Academy in Carrollton, Alabama.

District Attorney Chris McCool says the sexual allegations against 32-year-old James Parker involved a former female student.

While the allegations against his 30-year-old wife, Charli, involve one male student.

Under Alabama law, a teacher accused of having sex with an underage student is a serious crime.

“The law is Alabama statue 13A-681 that says a school employee of any kind, teacher or not, having sex with a student that’s underage 19, 19 is the cut-off, 19 is not a crime, under 19 it is a felony,” said Dennis Harmon, Mississippi and Alabama Lawyer.

This law is relatively new, going into effect in 2010 and can carry 2 to 20 years in prison.

Court documents show Charli Parker’s alleged sexual relationship with the male student dates back to October 2014 and happened as recent as March 28th.

Prosecutors say the sexual acts took place 11 times.

In cases like this one, the victim wont see any punishment.

“The student has no liability at all, whether they consent or not, it’s the same as statutory rape. They are cleared, they have not committed a crime but the adult has, the teacher has, the school employee has,” said Harmon.
Some of the Pickens County residents WCBI talked to say they are saddened by the recent news and shocked that something like this would happen in their town.

“We send our kids to school to get an education, not to be sexually harassed like that. I think they should get a cruel punishment,” said Mark Leavy, local resident.

Investigators say the crimes the Parker’s are accused of committing are separate incidents and not related.

They also say nothing happened on school property.
