VIDEO: MSU Collaborates Internationally to Create Self Driving Car

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- A team of international collaborators met Wednesday at Mississippi State for a symposium all about Advanced Vehicle Technology.

“In different states there are already legal opportunities for these autonomous vehicles, and self driving cars but even more than that we’re seeing driver assisted autonomy and that’s in cars we can buy right now in terms of lane keeping, helping you manage your blind spot and things like that,” says Executive Director at Mississippi State’s CAVS Clay Walden

And now in Mississippi we’re working towards even more robotics- self driving vehicles.

The engineers believe this will improve the safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians as a whole.

Researchers from all over the world met to discuss advances in autonomous vehicles and human factors research.

“Japan Korea, Germany, all collaborating together on different aspects of the vehicle,” says Walden.

Walden showcased the advancements in technology the university has made and the work they are currently doing.

The university is using virtual reality to test the interactions between humans and these vehicles.

“There’s incremental improvements in safety that we see even now,” says Walden.

This way the testing takes place in a secure environment.

“We can study the interaction between pedestrians and autonomous vehicles in a safe manner,” says Walden.

Walden says he’s excited for students to have these opportunities.

“We’re able to introduce our students, our graduate and undergraduate to the technology of the future. There is no doubt that there will be a paradigm shift that we’re gonna see the way we do mobility and transportation in the next 10 to 15 years,” says Walden.

Not to mention, all that awaits in the future.

“We now have funded projects in Korea, and we’re working on funded projects with our Japanese collaborators,” says Walden.

This was the second year the university held the symposium.
