Video: New Albany Leaders Draft Liquor Ordinance

[bitsontherun Rpio49n2]NEW ALBANY, Miss. – (WCBI) The City of New Albany has moved a step closer to selling liquor within the city limits.

The City Council voted to draft a liquor ordinance along state guidelines. The state does not allow Sunday sales, and liquor cannot be sold within 400 feet of a funeral home, church, school, or daycare center. The council will hold a public hearing on May 7th and could approve the ordinance during that meeting or delay it until June. Mayor Tim Kent says they have addressed concerns about crime and other issues associated with the new statute.

“We feel like it. You know we’re going to do everything we can to keep crime to a minimum as we always have. I think some concern is advertisement and we going to address that later and try to have like our beer ordinance where there won’t be alot of advertisement or any that can be seen from the street,” says Mayor Kent.

Kent says bringing liquor sales to New Albany will help attract more restaurant chains to the city, if the population grows significantly. He believes the first liquor permits will be approved within 30 days of the council’s final approval of the ordinance.
