VIDEO: New Executive Director At Columbus Arts Council Looks To Continue Its Growth
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- It’s been just over a month since Columbus native Lynn Brown took over the reins at the Columbus Arts Council.
“I grew up in this town,” said Brown, Executive Director at the Columbus Arts Council. “I’ve been away for a while so it’s good to kind of come back and see how the town has progressed, and how me being here at the arts council can kind of help move Columbus forward in a new direction.”
Brown said she has a passion for non profit organizations and has big plans for the arts council.
“Especially in terms of resource development, how we can get more businesses involved with us, and in terms of sponsorships, and increasing our membership too” she said.
So to help continue its growth, Brown wants to get the community more involved in what the arts council is doing.
“Art really encompasses everything,” Brown explained. “I’m hoping that we can provide programs and events here that can kind of spur creativity and inspire the community as a whole.”
While she’s eager to help move the non profit organization in the right direction, Brown admits she’s faced with challenges.
“It’s a small community and we’re not the only nonprofit in town, and so there are many groups here that are offering great programs and services that are also short on resources,” the executive director said. “So, it’s a small pool for a lot of individuals to try to get the same thing in order to achieve their goals for their organization.”
Brown previously worked at the Starkville Arts Council, and plans to rely on her past experiences to help her vision become a reality.
“You know, bringing it into neighborhoods and areas that typically would not have an opportunity to experience what we do,” said Brown. “So definitely working with other organizations around town and looking at potential partnerships with other groups on how we can bring the arts to them.”
Brown plans to collaborate with the the art councils in West Point and Starkville.
