NORTH MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — North Mississippians learn more about how the military gets wounded warriors out of Afghanistan.

The 81st Medical Group showed off the aircraft that is used. It also provides a full range of medical care and services, including in-flight ICU services.

The 81st is based out of Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.

While they’ve helped save thousands of American soldiers, they can also help during a disaster.

“It’s the same capability that could be coupled with our friends over at the Mississippi Department of Health, or the Med Center, in case there is a natural disaster or contingency like Katrina, those same combat capabilities, of combat medicine, could be applied here for a natural disaster or some contingency,” Col. Paul Nelson said.

Pilots trained in Columbus are the same pilots who help the 81st evacuate injured service members.
