VIDEO: Being Prepared Against Warm Weather Pests

CALHOUN CITY, Miss.(WCBI)—There are pests for all times of the year but arguably the most pesky are mosquitoes.

With the wet, moist, humid weather mosquitoes usually are getting up and moving.

Many area cities are hitting the ground running when it comes to combating one of the biggest villains of the season, mosquitoes.

For four years now, Lee Burnes has been fighting the bite as Calhoun City Public Works Director.

“This time is mostly the rainy season. It’s a lot of water, mosquitoes could hatch in the water and lay in the water.  This is really the best time to start slowing them down,”said Burnes.

He says mosquitoes present a threat to public safety but there are some simple things you can do to cut down the risk.

“The biggest portion is any bucket sitting around the house with water in it, pour it out, turn them upside down, keep your ditches clean cause they will live in that right there. That’s a breeding ground,”said  Burnes.

Calhoun City resident David Barnett says he’s concerned not only about his safety but also his pets’.

“One thing about mosquitoes is they bite dogs or something like that it can give them heart worms and then that could lead into a lot of money. I had one treated several years ago it was like 250 dollars to have it treated so year so yeah you could run into some expensive things,”said Barnett.

Mosquitos have created great concern throughout the country, carrying viruses like; West Nile, Yellow Fever and of course the latest Zika.

Burnes says as long as you stay ahead of the curve, the risk of crossing paths with the mini blood hunters should be minimized.

“You can keep control of the mosquitoes by staying ahead of them. The more you can do to keep around your houses clean with the debris gone, they ain’t got no breeding ground. That will take care of a good portion of it.

Research shows what most of us know mosquitoes never completely go away, unless the area experiences very cold winters with temperatures consistently below 50 degrees.
