VIDEO: Preparing For Thanksgiving Feast

CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI) – Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy family and friends but it can also be hectic if you don’t properly plan and budget.

One of the most important preparations for Thanksgiving is making a run to the grocery store and Calhoun City resident Sandra Mowrey says, from experience, waiting could put dent in the celebration.

“I waited last year and liked to never have found my turkey. We went to, I can’t tell you how many stores. I thought that I would put the turkey off till last. So, if I start early I know that I have the ingredients on hand,”said Mowrey.

Piggly Wiggly store manager Tommy Schmitz says they recognize the stress shoppers are under, getting ready for the holiday and want to make the process easy.

“We try and put up displays up on our front wall that people use; cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, chicken broth. We do a lot of ham and turkey and Eagle Brand Milk a lot of stuff like that, that people buy a lot of, I’ve got it back stalked already so we can make sure we got enough for thanksgiving,”said Schmitz.

Mowrey says shoppers should always have a plan of action way before going down aisles.

” I always go by the aisle, making my grocery list out according to what the aisle are. I look down because at home I’ll put down in the aisle where it is , what I need watch for my cranberries ready,”said Mowrey.

The American Farm Bureau Federation conducted a study that shows the average Thanksgiving dinner, this year, for 10 people will cost $49.12.

Sandra Mowrey says in order to save her change purse she likes to get the ball rolling early on her shopping list.

“Like maybe a couple months early and get my basic things down of what I want to do so I know that as I go I can see some bargains or something I can pick it up a long the way get my turkey way early and just start filling in as I come closer and closer to it,”said Mowrey.

Calhoun City Piggly Wiggly will have extended hours November 22nd.
