VIDEO: Raising Awareness for Low Voter Turnout

MISSISSIPPI STATE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s National Voter Registration day, and a new organization raises awareness about the importance of exercising your right.

“Mississippi Votes” travels to areas across the state that have low voter turnout, informing people about the importance of local elections and and how they can affect everyday lives.

Today, the group was on Mississippi State’s campus.

Representatives say younger voters aren’t their only targets.

“We’re actually doing a lot of intergenerational stuff. We’re trying to go to high schools, we’re going to neighborhoods with low voter turnout, and we’re even trying to register ex-offenders so all different types of people. We’re trying to get people with low voter turnouts across the board, which are often young people registered to vote,” said MS Votes Campus Ambassador, Betty Thomas.

MS Votes partnered with several campus organizations to help increase participation today.
