STARKVILLE,  Miss. (WCBI) – Peter’s Rock Church is reaching out to kids this Summer with a “Read to Succeed” Summer literacy program.

“Reading is at the forefront of anything that a child does, whether it’s Math, a language, Science, Social Studies. Regardless of what it is, they always have to read,” says Clara G. Ware.

Ware is one of the staffers says the equation is simple: Learning to read is the gateway to a successful education… and no doing so could have dire consequences.

Ware continues, “And if a child doesn’t learn how to read between first and third grade, they’ll uh, start having failures, and they won’t want to continue in school. And we don’t want any students to drop out because they don’t know how to read.”

The goal of “Read to Succeed” is to ignite the passion for reading in youth by checking children’s reading skills. Children who participate in “R2S” will be taught by certified teachers and counselors. Their hope is to help youth score higher on standardized tests.

“Make you think, which is one of my favorite things to do is to make children think.”

And lots of deep thinking, learning, and fun is to be had.

“I’ve learned new strategies on finding the main idea and how to quantify,” said Daria Hanks, one of the participants in the “Read to Succeed” program.

Zamarion Ware said, “I love school. It’s very fun to me. I like learning a lot. I like doing work. I have a good time working.”

The R2S Program is dedicated to helping children become competent, independent readers. The program is free, and the rewards of inspiring a child to become a better student are priceless.

The program continues through July 31st.
