VERONA, Miss. (WCBI) -A Saltillo man who claims he robbed a bank after he lost his job pleads guilty and gets a 15 year sentence. This morning, 41 year old Michael Oliver entered the guilty plea in Lee County Circuit Court.

Oliver faced charges in connection with the robbery of the Renasant Bank branch in Verona May first.

Lee County Sherfiff Jim Johnson says Oliver entered the bank , handed the teller a note demanding money and mentioning a weapon.

He took about 2 thousand dollars, and left the bank. Oliver was arrested days later and decided to plead guilty to the state charges. Sheriff Johnson says Oliver should have tried to find different ways to help his family.
“His first intentions, in his own mind, in the panic mode, I’ve got to do something quick to get this money but you did not look at the ramifications or the result of your actions, which now , he still doesn’t have the money, for whatever reason he needed and now his family is going to be without him for up to possibly 15 years so it has certainly enhanced the problem, not fixed it.”

Oliver will also have to make full restitution to the bank. He has a prior criminal record in another state. Johnson adds that Oliver could still face federal charges for the bank robbery.
