TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The state’s chief election officer says he’s glad that State Senator Chris McDaniel has moved the challenge of his GOP primary runoff loss to the courts.

Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann was guest speaker at the Tupelo Kiwanis Club meeting today.

He talked about the challenge by McDaniel, and said the battle is a reminder that there is still political dysfunction in the state.

On Thursday, McDaniel’s attorney filed the challenge in Jones County.

Hosemann said the issue has dragged on long enough and it’s time to bring it to a close.

“It’s been harmful to our state’s reputation and reinforcing stereotypes I’d prefer not to,” Hosemann said. “I think all of us in Mississippi are ready for a decision, and this will get that. Our military overseas voters start September 20th, so we’ve got a very small time frame here.”

Hosemann also said he is proud of implementation of voter ID and how smoothly it went.
