VIDEO: Second Chance At Life; Alcorn County Inmates Graduate From Class Taught By NEMCC Instructor

CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI)-  It was a proud day for several instructors at Northeast Mississippi Community College Thursday, as some students in Corinth receive completion certificates.

This class is a little different. They’re learning while serving time in the Alcorn County Regional Correctional Facility.

The project matches instructors and students in the facility.

A completed course means college credit and a chance to move forward with education when time is served.

“Most of these men have families, and this can be that turning point in their future, and the future of their families,” said NEMCC Counselor Ronald Sweeney.

Thurgood Jowers was one of the men who completed the course and says it’s a great way to give him a fresh start in life.

“Well, my initial, initial reaction was first of all, better myself. So, I took the opportunity and did the class and I really enjoyed the class for another opportunity of, you know, better myself with the skills,” said Jowers.

A total of eight inmates completed the course.
