VIDEO: Sheriff’s Office Continues To Warn About Scam

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve received even more calls on a scam, going after your money.

WCBI first reported Tuesday that the scam is targeting elderly people. The caller claims to be an employee with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department and says a warrant is issued for your arrest, for failing to show up for jury duty.

The scammer then gives instructions on where to purchase a verification card and have money put on it to post your bail, that doesn’t really exist.

Chief Deputy Marc Miley says several people have fallen victim to this scam.

“Anybody that asks you to go to a store, get a money order, put money on a card, you know something is up. We don’t operate like that here. We’re not going to ask for money that way and we don’t serve warrants that way,” said Miley.

Chief Deputy Miley says the scam was first reported last week.

The sheriff’s department urges before you send money to anyone, make sure you know it’s a real organization.
