Cornith Mississippi is the place to be this weekend. This is the 26th annual slugburger festival. Visitors have flocked to town to try out Corinth’s special burger, enjoy carnival rides and all the other attractions of a community festival. Taylor Coombs is Executive Director of Mainstreet Corinth which hosts the festival. She says a slugburger has a long history in Corinth.

“A slugburger is a deep fried soyburger and it has a little bit of pork and a little bit of beef and they are called a slugburger because during the depression they were sold for a nickel which was referred to as a slug. And the reason this combination came about was because they tried to stretch the meat as far as they could to make more burgers,” says Coombs.

Coombs says while several other communities serve slugburgers, Corinth serves the best. Coombs was a contestant at today’s slugburger eating contest and achieved her goal of eating three slugburgers.
