ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Employee policies ensures that city governments operate smoothly but those policies have to be updated as the community and laws change.

Aberdeen is one city that has already begun to look at making some changes to their employee handbook.

New laws and new ways to communicate are just two reasons why small municipalities are reviewing their employee handbooks and policies.

“Our last handbook was adopted in 1998. A lot of things have changed since then – the use of social media, internet, cell phones. So we’re just trying to update that. Family medical leave, military. We have had a lot of changes in recent years, so we’re just trying to update the policy so that everybody can read it and understand it,” says Aberdeen City Clerk Jackie Benson.

The Aberdeen Board of Aldermen voted last week to have the city’s employee handbook updated. The process is complicated, but Benson says it shouldn’t take long to get a plan in place.

“We’re hoping maybe with in the next couple of months, that we’ll have a new policy adopted for the city employee handbook and possibly for the police department to have a new Standard of Operation procedure for them as well,” says Benson.

If new policies are approved, each employee will receive a copy of the new handbook.

After the Board reviews the policy changes, a majority vote is needed for approval.
