TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — There are questions surrounding the activation of emergency sirens during Tupelo’s tornado. Our staff has talked with many Tupelo residents who say they did not hear any sirens as the tornado was approaching Tupelo. However, there are others who said they did hear the emergency sirens sound warnings. Also, this afternoon, we spoke with Emergency Management Agency Director Lee Bowdry, who says there is data showing the sirens were activated Monday afternoon as the tornado was about to hit the area. Earlier today, a congressional delegation visiting Tupelo credited early warning systems, television newscasts and social media for helping save lives Monday afternoon when the tornado tore through town.
