VIDEO: Starkville City Leaders Looking A Possible Annexation

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Starkville leaders are considering expanding the city’s borders.

On Tuesday, the board of aldermen agreed to commission a study on the possibility of annexation.

Mayor Lynn Spruill said this is just a study to see if annexation would be feasible and beneficial to the city.

Starkville hasn’t expanded since 1998.

If this move comes to fruition, Spruill said it could push the city’s population to over 30,000 residents.

“This is just areas around, contiguous to Starkville city limits, to look and see where we might see some path for growth. We have gone a little bit to the west where there is some population, then just a little bit to the north where there was a street that was originally planned to be annexed in 1998 and did not get in for whatever reason, and then a good bit to the east and south of the south. With the east being Mississippi State, a large population area and one of the things that I have been very clear about wanting to do Is to increase our population,” said Mayor Spruill.

Also during the meeting, the board chose not to amend the current smoking ordinance to allow an indoor smoking exemption for vape shops.
