Video: Student Athlete of the Week: Katie Beth Williams, Smithville HS, Softball

SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI Sports) — The Smithville Softball Program is known for winning state championships. This week we feature senior athlete Katie Beth Williams, who has won seven softball titles since her seventh grade year. Four state titles in slow pitch and three in fast pitch. Now she looks to finish up with nine titles after her career is over with.

Winning State Championships in softball comes no easy task for the Senior Katie Beth Williams especially being a multi-sport athlete. Williams also is a cheerleader and plays basketball at Smithville High School and making memories with her teammates is like having a family.

Katie Beth Williams: “Winning the championships are fun, but making friends and the family like every body as a team, but this team here at Smithville is more like a family,” said Williams.

Winning a state title is something you can cherish for the rest of your life.

Williams: “Even to win a state title it don’t matter how many you have. It’s fun to win. It’s a big goal medal that you set a goal for. It being my senior year I would hope to have another one,” Williams said.

Williams has enjoyed playing under Head Coach Jeremy Duke and now will look forward next season to play at Mississippi Gulf Coast.

“I’m looking for something different. I love Coach Duke, but being able to play under another coach. I’m looking for the experience,” Williams said.

Williams will look forward to playing against her teammate and our former Student Athlete of the Week Angel Guyton next season as Guyton signed to play at Jones County and Guyton thinks Williams will be successful at Mississippi Gulf Coast.

“I feel like that bond. She’s going to be with me even though she’s going to be at a different school, so we are going to be helping each other definitely and she’s going to do big things,” said Guyton.

Williams has played multiple positions on the softball team and Coach Duke sees that athleticism she’s brought to the team.

“Katie Beth overall is just a phenomenal athlete. She can play any position on the field other than pitcher in fast pitch. She’s caught for us. She’s played short. She’s played outfield you know she’s played them all. She’s a natural athlete and a natural outfielder,” said Duke.

Williams wants to finish out her career on a high note and make a name for herself following her high school career.

“Everybody wants you to look up. Everybody wants the little ones to look up to you, but when I leave and come back I want people to think she was a good player. She’s a good role model. I want them to look up to me and I want to think she’s the best,” Williams said.
