VIDEO: Taking Proper Care of Outdoor Plants in Freezing Weather
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s no secret the weather is starting to resemble the season.
While we put on warmer clothes, there’s something that can’t layer up, outdoor plants.
Outdoor plants and cold weather have never been the best of friends, and the frost predicted to hit the area poses a threat to plants of all kinds.
“Most plants, per se, are going to be susceptible to the frost. Ferns and things with a lot of new growth will be more tender,” said owner of Boardtown Garden & More, Dawn Herring.
New growth means more water in the plant.
Proper trimming will keep plants from frosting over, but the main care tip is watering.
“get them watered ahead of time because anything that is already wilted or stressed will be in more danger of frost damage,” said Herring.
Just the right amount though.
“It’s always a fine line with plants as to whether too much or not enough water with the frost. You need to be ready before the frost comes,” continued Herring.
Cold weather may be closing in, but contrary to popular belief this is the time to start new roots.
“We always say Fall is a good time for planting for that reason because they can take advantage of the watering of the winter rains and the roots can grow. They are protected by the soil around them and the mulch, and that helps them get through the winter and to grow more through the Spring,” said Herring.
For those who do have outdoor plants, get them watered ahead of time and trim them properly so they don’t get lost in the frost.
