Video: The Mississippi Hall Of Master Teachers
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Another teacher joins the Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers.
The Mississippi Hall Of Master Teachers is a long-line of teachers recognized throughout the year.
The Mississippi University for Women College of Education and Human Sciences held a ceremony to honor and recognize Shirley Walker James.
She was the university’s first African American undergraduate, and the first African American graduate from their education department.
After graduation, she became a teacher in the local community.
“She graduated in 1969, and so we have recognized her for her accomplishments in the local community as a teacher, and also for the role that she played in the desegregation of the university,” says the College of Education and Human Sciences Interim Dean, Dr. Martin Hatton.
James was unable to attend the event, but a video presentation was played to show her receiving her plaque.
The event is also apart of the university’s year long celebration desegregation.
