MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) — Spring may be here, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. The Winter snap is making farmers take precautions. As the temperatures dip into the 20’s overnight, owners at Mayhew Tomato Farm are covering their strawberries with light, cotton material to make sure the young plants aren’t damaged.

“The purpose is to keep frost off and maybe keep the temperature up, maybe 3 4, 5 degrees get it  past that freezing point because any blooms out there if they freeze they will die and those strawberries,” said Melvin Ellis, the owner of Mayhew Tomato Farm.

Ellis says the Winter snap won’t set him back. They track weather data often.
