VIDEO: Town Dedicates Monument To Veterans

KENNEDY, Ala. (WCBI)—Honoring those who protect, fought, and served. That was the message this morning as the residents of Kennedy Alabama gathered together to celebrate the unavailing of their veteran’s monument.

Kennedy Alabama is made up of 434 people. However, Desert Storm Veteran Kevin Dixion says the size doesn’t hinder the love and support of the Town has for the armed forces.

“I’m happy to see how Kennedy come together and how we are showing oneness and that’s something we’ve been needing in the country today and I’m happy to see it start here,” said Dixion.

Kennedy Town Clerk and event organizer Rabecca Akins says Saturday’s dedication is just a small drop in the bucket compared to the services the veterans provided.

“The veteran’s have sacrificed a lot for us. For us to be able to do everything.. our freedom and it just means a lot,” said Akins.

The event showcased the towns new monument and customized brick sidewalk. Aktins says it took a lot of boots on the ground to complete the monument but there is still room for residents to be apart of the history.

“The bricks are for any body that was in the service. You can come to the town hall and buy a brick. We’ve got the 4×8’s for $25 the 8×8’s for $35 and you can put anything you want on the brick and they will be put down here at the memorial. The monument went through a lot of planning and dedication between the mayor and the council ant they finally come up with what we have here today the names on the monument are the ones that died in the war that were from Kennedy which we only have 2 and I’m proud of that… that we didn’t have more,” said Akins.

Though the dedication was an hour Dixion says it will always leave a lasting impact on him.

“It makes us feel appreciated and feel special and it helps us get over the battles we face with us coming together so it helps us heal from some of the scares we developed during war time so it means a lot,” said Dixion.

This was the town’s inaugural Veterans Celebration. They hope to make it an annual event.
