TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq will be the next congressman for Mississippi’s First district. WCBI’s Allie Martin is standing by in Tupelo with more… Allie ?

Thanks, we are here at the Bancorpsouth Conference Center, where Republican candidate Trent Kelly made his acceptance speech shortly before nine, thanking his supporters, family and friends who voted for him and supported his run for the congressional seat.

It was a jubilant crowd welcoming Trent Kelly, who is the District Attorney, and a Colonel in the Mississippi Natinoal Guard.

Kelly beat Democrat Walter Zinn for the First District Seat, left vacant when Congressman Alan Nunnelee passed away in February.

The 49 year old congressman elect says he will work to uphold conservative values on Capitol Hill. He spoke with us right after thanking his supporters.
“To do our part, to make sure we don’t have any additional regulations, that we have a strong defense and we take care of our veterans, those are the things that are very very important to me, along with a lot of others, but I just want to get up there and get acclimated and learn on the job as quickly as I can.”

Although there is no firm date, one of Kelly’s aides believes the Congressman-elect will take the oath of office within the week.
