TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Tupelo City Council members are being asked to approve half a million dollars in matching funds for a capital improvement grant for the airport. That request was made this afternoon during a work study session by Tupelo Regional Airport Director Josh Abramson. The funds would provide a dollar for dollar match to a grant from the Mississippi Department of Transportation Multi-Modal Improvement Program.

If the grant is received, it would mean the airport would have a million dollars to build a new taxiway and to replace the old runway. There would also be an opportunity for economic development on a 22 acre parcel on airport property.

“In my years here, within the first week here, about four years ago we were working on a $30 million economic development program and we were one of the top five finalists in the United States, so there’s opportunity for a big project to go right there but as well as, the bigger projects or we can have future expansions of just our general aviation as we increase in hangar space at the airport.”

Deadline for the grant is April 4th. If the council approves funding, Abramson won’t likely have an answer on whether or not the city has received the grant money until June.
