Tupelo, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo High School’s showchoir is basking in a huge win this past weekend at a competition. As WCBI’s Allie Martin reports in this week’s “Making the Grade” the group took top honors at a prestigious event and now they are preparing for a chance at the superbowl of show choir contests.

For 51 students, months of practice and preparation came down to this one performance.

The 30 minute concert by the Tupelo High School Showchoir, known as Syngery and the live band , called Structure, wowed the judges during this past weekend’s “Fame” competition in Branson Missouri and were named Grand Champions.

“We were just so excited just to be able to go and when they called our name , everybody just jumped up and screamed, it was just a fabulous, surreal moment for us.”

Danielle Frerer directs the 39 female singers, 3 crew members and 9 band members and says the students have been working hard.

“A lot of blood sweat and tears”

Now, the showchoir will take their award winning performance to the national competition later this month in Chicago, where they will compete against the best high school groups in the nation.

So for the next few weeks there will be more rehearsals as the students learn valuable lessons .

“We never thought we were going to make it, but we did and we pulled through and conquered”

“It’s been great, I’ve loved the experience, the people in show choir and it’s just been fun.”

“As everyone knows, a group of 40 girls can be kind of difficult with different opinions and stuff so it teaches you to get along with everyone and we’re all different ages and have different interests, this is one thing we come together and we do.”

The students will also be fundraising to cover the cost of the Chicago trip, which will be about 17 thousand dollars.
