Video: Two South Carolina Sisters With Passion For Volunteering And Travel Make A Stop In Northeast Mississippi

TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – It is five till seven Friday morning, and Lee Ellen and Lindsey Fulmer are getting last minute instructions.

All this week they’ve helped at “Saints’ Brew,” a ministry of All Saints Episcopal Church, where hot breakfast is served to all who come, five days a week.

The South Carolina sisters have a passion for volunteering and visiting new places, so they came up with something called “Project Wave.”

“Waves start out small, but they, with time, grow and get bigger and bigger and eventually they can make a huge impact,” said Lee Ellen Fulmer.

After graduating college and taking care of some personal debts, the Fulmer sisters began planning for “Project Wave.” They are rolling into every state in the continental U.S., volunteering at non profits. Mississippi is their 49th state. A friend suggested they help out at “Saints’ Brew.”

“I think more churches should be involved in outreach like this, you hear in churches that it’s important to bring people in and you want to lead them to Christ, but the only way you can do that is if you reach out into the community,” Lee Ellen said.

Lee Ellen and Lindsey save money by staying in host homes.

“We left with about a month’s worth of money, and just kind of stepped out in faith and said, it will come through, and from there , we’ve had partners, about a week’s worth a month comes in from people who say we want to partner with you, other than that, it”s every week someone hands us money or takes us to dinner, buys us gas,”  Lindsey said.

The sisters say their nearly year long adventure has taught them a lot about the country and its people. They also see a need for more millennials to volunteer.

“You see a lot of things on social media, people doing kind things for one another but we kind of see this trend that it’s all about what kind of popularity I can gain from doing something nice. We’re really trying to use this as a charge for people our age, serving others is going to give you that gratification you’re seeking through social media,” said Lindsey.
