VERONA, Miss. (WCBI) – An elementary school librarian who has been battling cancer gets a surprise from her co workers.

Monday afternoon, teachers and staff at Verona Elementary held a reception for librarian Alisha Hughes. In May, Hughes was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she hasn’t been able to return to work because of the chemo regimen she is on.

Last week, teachers and staff observed “Think Pink” week by paying ten dollars to wear jeans and pink shirts. The money was given to Hughes during the reception.

“Being back has been wonderful, I see a lot of faces from last year and then a lot of the ones who kind of helped me and picked me up when I first found out because I was at school when I found out.”

Hughes hopes to return to work in January.
