NORTH MISSISSIPPI – (WCBI) We are in the graduation season and one survey reveals that 64% of parents are hoping their children will choose to become lawyers. For many of us, having a daughter or son who is an attorney or physician means having a respected professional in the family.

“I wanted my daughter to be a lawyer but she chose not to be, but I think she would have been great for the job,” said Elnora Harrington, Houston, Ms.

“I’ve wanted my daughter to be a lawyer because she argues very well,” said Susan Kuykendall, Columbus.

Although Susan Kuykendall’s daughter Savannah wants to be an attorney, she doesn’t want to spend her time in a court room setting.

Everyone we spoke with placed attorneys in one of two categories. Honest and helpful or dishonest and placing money about people.

“Well, the kids and the parents think that there is a lot of money in it. And there is a lot of money in it, it depends on how you make it,” said Janet britton, Columbus.

“Ha, ha, ha. I think because the money, but also because we know that we have an epidemic of our young black males in prison. And it would be great if they have some good representation,” said Harrington.

Upper level financial compensation is possible, but young lawyers must work very hard.

They usually have massive student loans to pay back, and landing a job at a good firm is an incredibly competitive ordeal.

One thing is certain, as long as there are people needing legal help and advice, there will be men and women pursuing a place among professionals in the legal profession.

“I want her to be a lawyer so she can have job stability,” said Kuykendall.

The survey involving respondents who want their children to become lawyers is taken from the online legal resource, Lawyers.com.
