WEBSTER COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Two men are behind bars in connection with a recent rash of burglaries in Webster County.

A baptist church and several homes were stolen from within the past few weeks.

Hebron Baptist Church is one of several places broken into this month.

“Around two weeks ago, we started having a string of burglaries. They started hitting some of our churches on the eastern side of the county. We’ve had four or five homes that stuff was taken out from under the car port and stolen out of the shed,” said Webster County Sheriff Tim Mitchell.

Sheriff Mitchell says deputies were tipped off Thursday when a Civil War cannon was reported stolen.

Evidence led them to arrest Charles Alan Howell and Michael Allen Martin.

” We ran three search warrants on three houses, solved four home burglaries and one of the church burglaries,” said Sheriff Mitchell.

The stolen items range from children’s toys, to video game consoles and a variety of tools.

The two men face several criminal charges.

“They’re charged with multiple counts of trespassing, petit larceny and one is charged with burglary of a church and also burglary of an out building. So they’re looking at least two felony charges a piece,” said Sheriff Mitchell.

Sheriff Mitchell says he hopes to put a stop to other burglaries by starting new neighborhood programs.

“I would love to get a neighborhood watch throughout the county. Some communities I’ve talked to want it, some don’t but the more people we can get involved, it helps us solve our crimes a lot easier,” adds Sheriff Mitchell.

Bond was set at $5,000.00 for each suspect.
