Video: Winona Voters Approve Tourism Tax
WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) — Winona voters are looking to bring in more money to their town, and they hope a tourism tax will make it happen.
Residents approved the two percent tax Tuesday night, passing it by 72 percent.
285 voted for the tax, and 111 voted against it.
It needed 60 percent of the vote to be approved.
WCBI caught up with some residents about what they think about having the tourism tax.
“It’ll help make some improvements,” said Wendell Holmes. “We need some improvements made. It’ll help with our parks and a help a city out.”
“I think it’s going to hurt more than it’s going to help,” said Rick Sinquefield. “You’ve got towns that are 20 miles away from us that don’t have it, and that’s what’s getting the business right now, so why do you want to punch a certain population of your own town?”
The tax will go into effect September 1.
