Weir Elementary School offers summer learning program

WEIR, Miss. (WCBI) – Summer is almost here, and that means kids everywhere are packing up their books and preparing for fun in the sun.

But just because it’s summer doesn’t mean learning has to stop.

A Choctaw County Elementary School is looking to keep students growing.

School is coming to a close, and students, and teachers are getting ready for a well-deserved break.

But at Weir Elementary School, the learning experiences are just beginning.

“We are also offering a STEM Literacy based summer program for our students,” said teacher Julie Chase.

It’s full of hands-on activities, and teachers like Julie Chase hope that makes the ideas stick.

“By bringing this in, we are creating some fun experiences for the students to continue learning even though they’re not feeling like they are learning. You’re learning about angles, you’re learning about weight, you’re learning about buoyancy, but you’re doing it with hands all materials,” said Chase.

They’re hoping to slow what’s known as the Summer Slide.

When school starts back, teachers often find themselves recapping lessons from the year before.

“It’s all about keeping the students’ momentum moving forward and just enhancing that learning experience and enriching it. Moving them forward,” said Chase.

Many bigger towns and cities have programs like this every summer, so for a small town like Weir, Chase said it’s a big deal.

“Sometimes we’re overlooked because we’re small, but great things come from small communities. We may be a small community. We want the students to know it doesn’t matter how small you are you can do big things too,” said Chase.

Weir Elementary will also be hosting a summer food service program for all students in Choctaw County in June. Chase says the school wants to give back to the community.
