WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — West Point business leaders have a little extra money to promote the town’s many assets and now they are trying to figure out how best to do it.

In September, voters agreed to raise the city’s hotel and restaurant tax from 1 to 2 percent. Local businesses began collecting the increased tax in November and the city received the first revenues this month.

The money is to be used to promote the community, especially to motorists using busy Highway 45 Alternate.

Campaigns will use billboards and other advertising to push the historic downtown, the Howlin’ Wolf Museum, parks, Old Waverly Golf Course and other features.

“We got our first check this month about the fifteenth and we are looking at how we can be the best stewards of that money and how it will benefit people here in West Point,” said West Point-Clay County Growth Alliance Director Cynthia Wilson.

Wilson spoke to the West Point Rotary Club today.
