NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) -A Union County jury took less than 20 minutes to find a West Point man guilty of first degree murder.

34 year-old Tavaris Collins shot 16 year-old Devin Mitchell of Starkville on New Year’s Day in 2012, outside a West Point apartment complex.

Collins will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.Earlier this year, Collins rejected a plea deal of 40 years in prison.

A change of venue sent the trial to Union County.

Mitchell’s family says they can now move forward with their lives.

“We know now that Devin can rest we know it gives us closure, and we can rest and to God be the Gory to God be the Glory for all of them”
“It’s very hard to let go of someone that you love and it can eat away at you and ultimately destroy you. Something I try to counsel with them about when these things are over.”

Collins was immediately taken to a state prison.
