Witness Recounts Terror Inside Starkville Walmart

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- Early Saturday morning gunfire erupted inside the Starkville Walmart on MS 12. Police say one woman is dead and a man charged with Capital Murder.

You can hear in cellphone video, police asking a suspect to “put your hands up, put your hands up.”

In disbelief, Ken Murrell catches dramatic cell phone video of the police take down, moments after gunfire rang out inside the Starkville Walmart.

“Everybody ran for cover to be honest with you,” said Murrell.

Murell was inside using the bank when he heard shots fire around 9:30 Saturday morning.

“It sounded like a gunshot, but you’re thinking that early in the morning, in Walmart, surely it’s not,” said Murrell.

Seconds later, Murrell says people starting screaming and running.

“One of the ladies from the eye glass center was crying and screaming, she’s been shot, she’s been shot,” said Murrell.

Murrell says the eye center was just opening for the day. Tragically, sources say Dr. Shauna Witt died shortly after getting to the hospital.

Starkville Police charging 41 year old, William Thomas “Tommy” Chisholm, with Capital Murder.

“You could see the gun. He exited through the back door and we went through the sliding doors and as he was going to his car. The police showed up and we yelled a description and where he was going to,” said Murrell.

Starkville Police were on scene within minutes and say the man was armed and taken into custody.

“We believe this incident to be isolated and domestic in nature,” said Starkville Police Chief, Frank Nichols.

Police say according to close friends, Chisholm and the victim were in an on and off dating relationship. During the take down, you can hear the suspect yelling at police to kill him.

As the shock begins to set in, Murrell says it’s hard to put into words.

“The shock of what had happened, some people are just rattled. Some were running. It was just wild,” said Murrell.

Police say Chisholm is from Koscuisko. He was out on a felony bond for an incident related to the victim.

In 2012, reports show that Chisholm was involved in stand off with sheriff’s deputies in Madison County.

Chisholm’s first court date is set for Sunday at 3 p.m.
