ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — Aberdeen’s water department is one step away from what it hopes will be financial stability. But it’ll mean higher rates for about 850 customers who live outside the city.

The city is awaiting a final public hearing with the Public Service Commission before new rates take effect. That could happen within the next two months. The new rates will charge $22 for the first 2,000 gallons and $4.50 for every 1,000 after that. It could mean bills of about $37 per month for the average customer, about three times what they pay now. The state is requiring the higher rates to offset annual revenue losses and to help pay for improvements to the 60-year-old system.
