At approximately 8:32 p.m. Friday evening, October 14, Columbus Police responded to the 1700 block of 4th Avenue South to a report of a person was shot. When officers arrived, the 18-year-old victim had already been transported by a private vehicle to Baptist Memorial Hospital Columbus where he was pronounced dead.

Columbus Police immediately released a description of a potential suspect vehicle that was seen leaving the area of the shooting. A Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the vehicle and stopped it in the area of Brooks Road. The driver was detained and a handgun was recovered from the car.

A team of officers, crime scene specialists and investigators worked throughout the evening processing the scene and developed enough evidence to charge Brewer. He is currently being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.

Early Saturday, Columbus Mayor Robert Smith praised those involved in the case. “I would like to thank and recognize the excellent work from the Columbus Police Department officers and investigators, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, the Columbus Police Department Crime Lab and the Lowndes County 911 dispatchers. These professionals solved this case quickly and made an arrest within hours.”
