COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus firefighters know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The department will begin Tuesday making annual fire safety inspections at businesses throughout the city.

The inspections examine everything from working fire extinguishers to inappropriate use of extension cords and electrical problems.

Inspections will occur during regular business hours and under normal working conditions.

The department says the goal is not to punish business owners but to prevent even small fires that can cause expensive damage.

i wish they were checking the county businesses also because the little kitchen by the base has lots of fire hazards and probably is not up to code. whatever up to code may be. I Love The Food And Service, but i do not feel as if ther were an emercancy the bulding or traliers or whatever it is would be safe for anyone to be around.also if it is lightining i do not go eat there because i guess im crazy but there are wires hanging out from a spot in the bulding and i do not want to be there when they catch fire.
