COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — When you drive up to the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society it can be a bumpy ride.

“People when they pull in they’ll see a big dunk. That gravel keeps washing out,” says Executive Director Karen Johnwick.

Turning that gravel into concrete is just one of many repairs and upgrades the non-profit hopes to make.

The driveway is not the only gravel they hope to replace.

This dog play area is getting worn down as well.

“Tends to sometimes be rough on the dogs paws so we would like to look into another option, either a concrete or a recycled tire or something like that, that would not hold any disease and will be more gentle,” says Johnwick.

Number one on their list closing in this fence.

“Volunteers might be walking, dogs may escape. That would actually keep the animals on our property,” says Johnwick.

Other wish list items include new fans in the dog kennels.

“Humidity over there gets really bad. We of course wash out the kennels every morning and when it’s high humidity the floors never dry,” she says.

and extending some outside awnings so the dogs or their helpers don’t get soaked in a bad rain.

“If it comes down at a slant it comes into the outside dog kennels,” she adds.

When thousands of animals come in an out a year, the wear and tear never ends.

They hope to have these projects completed in the next few few years.
