STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – The immigration debate continues in our nation.

While Governor Phil Bryant spoke as the guest of honor for the annual Golden Triangle Development LINK industry award ceremony, he also took the opportunity to reiterate his stance on the immigrant children who have been sent to Mississippi for refuge. Federal records show 179 of 57,000 unaccompanied immigrant children caught at the US border from January to July this year came to Mississippi.

Bryant is at odds with the federal government about how to handle the immigrant minors.

“We are doing all we can to maintain care, custody and control for children in Mississippi needed. We cannot afford to bring in hundreds of other children from South America. We are doing all we can to try to stop that from occurring,” Bryant said.

Mississippi currently provides refuge to about two dozen immigrant children. The Mississippi Department of Human Services receives about $1 million per year in federal funding for this, as do other states.
