Houlka Moving Forward One Year After Fire

HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — It’s been almost one year since part of Houlka Attendance Center burned down, leaving the school stretched thin for space.

Last week the first step to rebuilding started.

Chickasaw County School’s Superintendent says everyone in Houlka is excited to move forward, even though all the details for the new building have not yet been figured out.

This was the scene at Houlka Attendance Center on year ago, now the ruins left behind are now being hauled away.

Losing the historical building has put the school in a bind.

“Some teachers who have had to share classrooms, we’ve had a teacher or two who have had to move around and use another teacher’s classroom space,” says Superintendent Dr. Betsy Cullums.

This year some of those problems will be solved.

To deal with that overcrowding, the school is going to put 4 temporary buildings right here, to make sure that those classrooms are not as packed as they were last year.

Plans for the new facility are still be constructed , but some things are set in stone.

” There will be some classrooms, administrative offices and at this time we’re not sure if we’ll replace the auditorium or not”
and what will be built, will stronger than ever,” says Dr. Cullums.

“To make sure that we get the biggest, best building that we can,” says Dr. Cullums.

Making sure this epicenter for the community keeps going strong.

Dr. Cullum says she hopes the new building will be built by next school year, but of course with construction, there are no guarantees.
