STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — After months of voicing their concerns about the state flag, several Mississippi State student organizations unite to make all of their voices heard on campus.
Dozens of students marched and held signs that said the state flag should be removed from campus, then they camped outside Lee Hall for a sit-in.

Students said they’ve talked to MSU President Dr. Mark Keenum about the issue, but haven’t seen progress.

“We’re not not respecting the process any longer simply because our ancestors had to respect the process a long long long time ago, and they had to organize marches and put the pressure on the people to actually make their voices be heard and things of that nature,” said Wilburn Smith, president of the NAACP.

However, Keenum said he shares the same goal as the students and wants a new state flag.

“I think respect is important, we have to be respectful in the process. Again, as I mentioned, this is a highly emotional process for our citizens, and I want to work through that process with our elected leaders, our elected officials to achieve the same goal that our students here today, who are voicing their opinions so proudly as they should, and I share their goal,” said Keenum.

As of now, the flag remains on campus.

Keenum said he wants to respect the flag and work through the correct process of changing it.
