COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s a time to recognize those who served our country as heroes.

Nearly 100 retired military members came together at the Columbus Air Force Base for Retiree Appreciation Day.

But what does it mean for those in attendance and why is it important to say thank you?

“You know, I need to do this. I haven’t been and James has been gone for five years and I thought you know, this will be nice to be amoung some Air Force folks,” said Rebecca Kelly, a widow of a retired Air Force Pilot.

Kelly says she came out to the Retiree Appreciation Day.

Her late husband served as a pilot in the Air Force for nearly 30 years.

She says it’s been a joy to take part in the day.

“Well it means everything because this was our life for 27 years and so to come and be with these retirees and these young people, it’s gratifying to know that we are still in a country who loves our veterans, who loves our country and we have those that are willing to give their lives,” said Kelly.

The appreciation day is celebrated annually.

Those from all branches of the military are invited to attend.

“So it’s all apart of that commradery between military members,” said James Poe, organizer of the event.

A number of vendors and guest speakers were also on hand for the free event.

Although it’s a time to say ‘thank you’ to retirees, organizers hope to send an important message to those still serving in active duty.

“What we wanted to do is to thank our retirees for all the service they’ve given to our nation and at the same time, let our young troops who are still on active duty know that once they get out of the Air Force or whatever branch of the military, they will not be forgotten,” said Poe.

The day wrapped up with tours of the Columbus Air Force Base.
