Starkville Plant Turns Timber Into Comfort

When it comes to having an over abundance of forests where trees are a dependable natural resource, —  Mississippi is among the top 10 in the country.
Wrapping up his look at the forestry industry,–  R. H. Brown takes us inside a Starkville furniture making plant where some “made in Mississippi” business style furniture is created and shipped arouund the globe

<        At Flexsteel in Starkville skilled hands of North Mississippi workers turning wood into furniture, there are a lot of people employed in the forestry industry.

Bill Martin/MSU-Franklin Furniture Institute             “There are approximately 20 thousand people working in the furniture manufacturing segment in the state. We have another 22,000 that are working in supply chain, that supplies the industry.”
Mark Chandler/Flexsteel Industries          “We are a commercial division here. So some of our big customers like Marriott of the world, some of the big senior living facilities. We are healthcare, hospitality and senior living is what we do out of this division.”

With supplies of plywood from Alabama and hardwood from Arkansas arriving at Flexsteel in Starkville, the process of transforming a natural resource into commercial furniture is a rich sight to behold.

Mark Chandler          You’ll see us, some of the dinning chair side you’ll see us build the frames up from woodstock. How they finish through the finish system. And then how they are assembled on the production line. With upholstery and out through packing through shipping.

As long as trees keep growing in Mississippi, forestry and it’s products should remain plentiful and strong for some time to come.

Bill Martin         “Since July of 2014 we’ve had over 12 companies announce expansions on new buildings. And of that 1,400 new jobs have been created.”
Mark Chandler      “Regionally local suppliers you know we get a couple loads each week. Depending on our volume and our demand. And we pretty much turn that pretty quickly, keep our inventories turned.”
