Union County Escaped Inmate Believe To Be In Winston County

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The search for an escaped Union County inmate has moved to Winston County.

Law enforcement were searching the Nanih Waiya area Thursday night for Michael Shafer, 28.  He is from the area.

Winston County Sheriff Jason Pugh says Shafer was last seen in the area of East Winston Road and Highway 490 wearing a black shirt and dark shorts.

Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards says Shafer escaped sometime after midnight.

Shafer was in jail on a probation violation and will now be charged with escape.

Edwards says one person was arrested in Union County in connection with the escape. He expects to make another arrest in Winston County.

U.S. Marshal’s, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Winston County deputies, and state troopers are searching for Shafer.
