CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) Ackerman welcomed home one of their Sunday tonight. Choctaw native and Grammy-nominated gospel singer Terry Blackwood returned home to give a concert at Ackerman Baptist Church. For the people of Ackerman, the tunes of Terry Blackwood sound like home. Blackwood’s family has a rich musical history. The Blackwood Brother’s Quartet began in the 1930s and younger generations of the Blackwood clan keep the group alive today. Their sounds can be recognized by audiences worldwide.

“There’s nobody that sounds like the Blackwoods. When you hear them you know who you’re listening to. We’ve been listening to the Blackwoods for a long time. They’ve been a big part of what southern gospel is,” said church member Nathan Linkins.

Terry Blackwood performed on Saturday at Ackerman’s downtown JuneFest and first time audience members were impressed.

“I heard him down here on Saturday. He’s real good, real good,” said Charles Peay.

While performing with contemporary Christian music group, The Imperials, Blackwood recorded with Elvis Presley and Jimmy Dean. He has also been nominated for a Grammy award for his album Following You. The Blackwood name has great significance in the gospel music but Terry’s unique sound has resulted in notable success.

“Classic, classic is the best word I can use,” said Linkins.

Terry recently released his new album, Anthology, and has already had a huge response from fans. Sunday’s concert also included a performance from local quartet Joyful Noise and the Ackerman Baptist Church choir.

The Mayor of Ackerman named June 2nd Terry Blackwood day.
