CARROLLTON, Al.(WCBI)–An Alabama group is crying out against closing Driver’s License Offices in that state, especially in rural areas of Alabama counties. Calling itself “SOS” or Save OurSelves is traveling the state in a caravan.

Having made the long trek Thursday from Bullock to Wilcox counties, a van pulls up to the Pickens County Judicial Center with people concerned about the closing of Driver’s License offices, especially in Pickens County.

“If you don’t have drivers license you can’t go to work, if you don’t have your drivers license you can’t go visit your relatives, if you don’t have drivers license you can’t go and shop,” said Senator Hank Sanders/Alabama.

Shutting down DMV’s they say, hurts poor and working families throughout Alabama. Upstairs at the Judicial Center, an empty room where potential motorist would come to get their license while others came to get them renewed. The offices were opened one day a month, not any more, and Sanders is convinced its not a budget issue.

“I know we put the money in there and put language in there that says, that they should not be closed down. So this is about politics, its not about lack of money or lack of resources,” said Hank Sanders.

And having put hundreds of miles on thier van on day one of a two day journey, they are getting their message to the people.

“Today we’re starting in Pickens, we will then go to Sumpter, then we’ll go to green, then we’ll go to Hale. Then we’ll go to Perry, and end up back in Selma,” said Hank Sanders.

And so as the caravan pulls out from Pickens, the mission is to reach out to citizens in these counties. Group participants believe the closing of these offices could adversely impact the right to vote, right to work, and other issues.

Over 75 percent of the citizens in these counties are African American. Alabama does require voters to have photo ID to vote.
