COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus Police Officers are on the streets of the Friendly City, this holiday season they are joining forces to spread Christmas cheer to needy families.

In the Friendly City the long arm of the law is indeed reaching out into the community. Having collected bikes and other toys, there is a strengthening of ties between the community and local law enforcement. Toys are being dropped off at East Columbus Gym, Sim Scott Park, and Sandfield and Townsend Community Centers.

“Certainly this, the season actually helps us to do those things and to be able to get out and help. So that’s certainly what we are about. Building those relationships,” said Tony Carleton/Columbus Police Chief.

A part of the goodwill bridge building initiative includes a special presentation of toys and gift cards at McDonald’s Restaurant on Alabama Street. The gifts are helping the needy, some of which are working mothers.

“I’m just overwhelmed right now, you know with words. Because you know its been hard but I just thank God you know that there was enough people that looked out for me and my children,” said Thervis Woods/Columbus.

“So thankful that they are doing this for the community. It’s wonderful for the children and for the families and all to come together. It is just something brilliant,” said Crystal Biller/Columbus.

And so from the community there are thankful hearts, because the people who protect and serve them, are making sure their holiday is a little brighter.

“And I hope everybody else gets blessed the same way we have this year for Christmas,” said Biller.

During the annual toy drive Columbus Police are delivering 100 bikes and handing out gift certificates to over 500 families in the city.
