CORINTH, Miss. (WCBI) – State investigators spend today going through the rubble of a Corinth business that went up in flames last night.

The building was built-in the early 1900’s and didn’t take long to be considered a total loss.

“It’s kind of hard to explain right now when you lose everything you’ve always worked for. It’s just gone, life savings right here,” said Tommy Goodman, owner of the Family Outlet.

Goodman has owned and operated Family Outlet in Corinth for almost a decade.

Wednesday night, it was destroyed as flames tore through the building.

Goodman says the community kept his business running over the years. Since the fire, he has seen and felt the support from loyal customers and strangers.

“When you’re down, somebody will always be there to bring you back up and I have friends here that will do that,” said Goodman.

Richard Smith owns a tobacco and liquor store connected to the Family Outlet.

He was working at the time of the fire.

“I was waiting on a customer actually and went to turn around and I saw smoke coming out of my back room and ran back there and the place was full of smoke,” said Richard Smith, the owner of R&T’s Corner.

Smith called 911 and says firefighters arrived minutes later.

“They were already in route, so they did a really great job and I’m proud of them. All the volunteer folks that came from around the counties and everything, they did a real good job,” added Smith.

It took the Corinth Fire Department, along with several volunteer departments, hours to contain the fire.

“We pretty much had it under control about midnight or a little before but around midnight it was under control, we were just having to get hot spots and trying to finish putting it out, it’s going to be a devastating loss for the city of Corinth,” said Corinth Fire Chief, Billy Briggs.

The State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
