WINONA, Miss. (WCBI)- Tarkevious Robinson and his cousin place flowers where their 21-year-old cousin Javon Johnson was gunned down.

“We were all chillin’ outside the house. A couple of guys came out and got into a fight, then they took off walking down the way. A gunshot came from behind the house,” said Robinson.

Johnson was shot in the head.

“They made it to Jackson, he started back breathing, he didn’t pass away until 2 or 3 days later,” said Robinson.

Annie Smith and her neighbor Eddie Campbell live a few doors down from where the shooting occurred. They’ve taken their concerns to Winona aldermen, about what they say is an increase in violence.

“This is the first killing, but there’s been some shootings before. The young man that got killed, that was something that could have been prevented, but you know it happened. So the only thing we can do now is try t o keep it from happening again,” said Campbell.

City leaders are preparing a curfew ordinance. They’re also looking into holding parents accountable if their children are under the age of 18.

“Really the officer or the judge can’t really do anything to the child. That’s the reason I said if it falls back to the parents for child neglect, then the parents are going to make sure my child is going to be at home,” said Campbell.

“It’s a senseless killing. And it’s got to stop. They don’t have anything to do during the day! They don’t have no job. So what else is there for them. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop,” said Smith.

For Javon Johnson’s family, change is coming too little too late.

“I feel like this ain’t going to stop. I want justice for him. He was a cool, collective guy. Calm, quiet, goofy. Always smiling, you’ve never seen him in any trouble or anything. I wish he was still here,” said Robinson.

WCBI reached out to the Winona Police Department to see if they’ve made any arrest but they weren’t available for comment.
